DIY Raw Organic Whipped Shea Body Butter

Hi again! Sorry for being absent for such a long time, I've been writing my bachelors thesis which I'm finishing up right now. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! Finally, time for some pampering! As a student with limited funds I don't like spending tons of money on body care products, it feels a bit excessive buying expensive lotions and body butters when most of the time you're body is covered with clothes anyway. Not to say it wouldn't be beneficial to use nice body care products year-round but who can be bothered?

However when summertime comes around and the clothes come off/get smaller I do like to treat myself to nicer body care products. Instead of going out and buying a body butter I thought I would make my own. This DIY Raw Whipped Shea Body Butter is of higher quality than the body lotions you find at the drugstore/pharmacy but not as costly as the really fancy high-quality ones in department stores.

My version uses a method without any heat involved and with raw ingredients - use what you have and don't worry if everything isn't raw. This is a basic DIY recipe that you can customize to your liking using the essential oils and base oils that you prefer. One thing to note before buying your ingredients: make sure you are not allergic to any of the oils, if you know you have nut allergies use oils you know you tolerate. So, why shea butter? Organic and unrefined shea butter is naturally rich in vitamin A and E which helps to moisturize and keep skin protected and looking young. In studies shea butter has been found to have significant anti-aging benefits due to its antioxidant content. Furthermore it contains anti-inflammatory cinnamic acid and fatty acids like oleic acid; both beneficial in skin regeneration. Shea butter has been known to help skin heal faster aiding in recovery from burns, scrapes, cuts as well as relieving skin in cases of eczema, rashes, muscle ache and insect bites. Perfect for the summer!

Anyway, here is what you need to make this creamy, fluffy and moisturizing raw whipped shea body butter:


Ingredients:

  • 4 oz. or approx. 110 ml of raw organic unrefined shea butter 
  • 2 tablespoons or 30 ml of base oil (almond oil,  jojoba oil, extra virgin olive oil et cetera). This oil should be liquid at room temperature.
  • 10-20 drops essential oils of your liking (optional)    
Here is what you need to make the body butter;  an electric whisks mixer, a bowl, measuring tools, a fork and a sanitized jar to store the body butter in once it's finished. The one I used holds around 2,5 dl.

Lets start!

Mashing the ingredients lazily
  1. The first step is to put the shea butter into the mixing bowl and mash it using a fork. It really helps if the shea butter is at room temperature otherwise this step will provide a nice workout for your arms. 
  2. Add the base oil(s) and do some further mashing.
  3. Time to do some whipping! Use high speed and mix for around 5 minutes.
  4. This step is optional, if you plan on using essential oils add them now and whisk for a few more minutes.

I used oils of hazelnut, rosehip, argan, avocado and jojoba for my base oil. The essential oils used here included neroli flower oil, lavender oil, chamomile flower oil and ylang ylang flower oil. Yes, this is a bit excessive but I'm trying to use them up before going away for my exchange semester.



(real talk: my body butter didn't turn out as smooth as it should. I was a bit lazy and didn't mash the shea butter thoroughly. No worries though, the body butter is just as lovely and the small amount of lumps will melt in contact with body heat).

That's it! Just fill up your jar and keep it in a dry, dark place in room temperature or cooler. If you use tinted jars you could probably store in daylight, just make sure the spot is not in direct sunlight as the body butter might melt.


One final tip: If you have a special occasion coming up and want to look extra glowy try mixing the body butter with an eyeshadow pigment in a shimmery golden or champagne shade before putting it onto your legs, arms and d├ęcolletage.
